300 Homes within a Union Street Mile

Clifton Emery Design, Nudge community builders, Millfields Trust, Plymouth Energy Community, Devon and Cornwall Planning Consultants

Streets ahead: 300 homes into a Union Street mile – a model for the delivery of community homes. Sensitively placing new community homes into the challenge, life and richness of an established urban high street – many small interventions to strengthen the whole.

Our approach: To illustrate how to provide 300 energy efficient, easily made, affordable homes, that can add to the grain and diversity of our cities – rebuilding the strength and resilience of communities. An approach that can be applied throughout the UK.

Macro-placemaking: Making the delivery of 1.5m homes relatable to the individual, group and community. Getting the scale and pace of change right is tricky but crucial. Many smaller dense pockets of the highest quality on a range of opportunity sites will help sustain the delicate balance in communities. A foundation for collective well-being and positive change. Homes that are part of the variety and texture of place – crafted amongst makers, studios, cafes, shops, venues, schools, nurseries, street-life, pubs, take aways…

Micro–homemaking: Tomorrows community homes beautifully designed and built by the community. Rented by Nudge and Millfields Trust in perpetuity - providing stewardship, maintenance, care, love, and support for residents. Designed and made off-site – 600mm grid (from cabinet to room to home), replicable, energy efficient, offering imaginative communal home space (lounge, outdoor garden, shared kitchen, snug, study, workspace, food growing space, storage) and private comforting home space – co-living places not bound by space standards but crafted to create legacy and to be safe, secure, warm and wonderful.
